Cabin in The Wood - KL Urban Intervention
WINNER: Honorable Mention
Nowadays, urban poor living at Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur is lack of public community spaces in their living surrounding. It is also lack of green forest spaces which leads to the earth global warming issue. The community around the Chow Kit do a lot of retail activities and business trades among themselves but not in a proper way which they use to be clustered during day and night. For the example is the night market. We are designing an improving public center for urban area which enhances the ecological, society and economy sectors of the city by injecting the forest concept into the design.

To all the entrants and jury, please consider the following aspects :
The concept and main ideas of entry Cabin in the Wood – KL Urban intervention seems plagiarism of our winning project [In]-closure for Seattle (may 2012).
Due to respect for all the work done by the participants as well as members of the profession, we urge the organizers to cancel this entry.
Also, the concepts presented in our project are protected at least by the right of authors as well as by a patent for some technical parts of the project (energy running track, event boxes assembly layout, etc…) that could lead to lawsuits.
Please be professional and consider the work of everybody canceling this entry.
our project as a proof : http://www.archdaily.com/237520/winner-announced-for-seattles-urban-intervention-competition/
ABF_lab would like to thank people for their vigilance.

Hello everyone,
The scheme that we have come out for the competition has been derived from various references and sourcing in which is the first step to any projects being produced (i'm sure every submitted projects have also done the same). in our part, we have reviewed many works from various backgrounds such as urban design, architecture, environmental and ecological design in which is a method called precedence referencing.
we believe that new ideas can be developed from the synthesis of different agendas. our main idea is to recreate the significance of New York's Central Park that is a public recreational centre for the people of the dense city. we have extracted the required info such as the capacity for the park, the various activities and robustness of the park as the generative idea for our scheme.
the Seattle’s Urban Intervention project from ABF is also one of the many projects that we have reviewed for our scheme, as well as other great projects concerning the architectural design using cabins as a method of exploring flexibility and sustainability of design in which i am sure one can easily find other projects using the containers as their design approach, which they have derived using the same precedence referencing method as we did.
the materials for our presentation which comprises of graphical data and images, drawings, visions of spaces, 3D rendering are all fully developed, designed and produced by us. there are no 'stolen' or '100 percent replicated' images from any other projects or whatsoever (not even from our reference list). therefore, we strongly disagree upon the comment of plagiarism because that would mean that the submitted work is 100 percent copied in terms of background study, design issues and graphical materials. our product also did not appear to mimic any perspective views and rendering techniques of the said project or any other projects from our reference list.
our site - Chow Kit in Kuala Lumpur is what we have targeted based on our issue of urban poverty. based on our study, Chow Kit has the highest density of poverty-stricken urban community and that was what our main design intention led towards. we have assimilated our design intention of extracting the qualities of Central Park New York into Chow Kit. based on that, we have chosen the approach of using sustainable building materials - containers, to fulfill the ecological fragility aspects.
activities and programmes that we have injected in our design scheme are based on basic urban development planning. commercial units or markets are injected in the design as a manner to generate vibrancy and economy for the targeted user and age groups in Chow Kit (in reference to the disorganized, clustered and improperly systemized night market and stalls in the area). recreational aspects such as wall-climbing, observatory deck, sky-bridge cafe and graffiti wall-painting that we have introduced in the design are as the response to the intention to bring more crowd into the site.
we strongly apologize for any inconvenience caused or misunderstanding that occurred and we also respect any efforts from your part to bring this matter to the organizer for reports. however, we will also play our part to double check with organizer upon our status as submitter for further evaluation. in that case, we are open to any decisions by the organizer and will fully respect them. meanwhile, we thank everyone for their concern on this matter and we ensure you that we stand strong for our work and will work hard to improve whatever that needs to be.
again, thank you so much and God bless.

Guys,
It's not the matter who came out with the idea first, but who made it possible. Idea is just the matter of point of reference. And please look at the cause and how it gonna bring impact to the society. I must say, this one is really gonna bring positive vibes given if the project is well-executed by them.
And to those who owns the ideas, thanks for inspiring both Afiq and Amir, may God bless you all!

ABF-Lab, I felt very sorry for you all for this to happen.
This is obviously STEALING!! However, as that's no
such thing as bad publicity, I strongly hope that this entry WIN.
Kindly SUE them right after they received RM100k prize money.
Other then that, please publicize with all means and to BRAG about how good your original design was as the SAME idea won TWICE although the 2nd one not won by ABF-Lab. May the force be with everyone including the "designers" for this entry.

There's no plagiarism at all. You dont have to become an architect or engineer to see the difference between those two. This is a truly brilliant idea. Haters will always be haters, haters gonna hate, will always find a reason to dislike, worry much ha?

To Abf I:
There are no such thing as plagiarism in the world of architecture. You don't have any patent registered to you on your idea thus you have no rights to ask the organizer to cancel this entry. There might be the same system used but overall it's totally a different concept and idea. I saw your presentation and there are no such accents of plagiarism from this entry. Like I said..maybe the same system but the whole context and function of the design are different and this competition is in MALAYSIA and totally different competition from where your presentation won. I challenged you, bring your lawsuit here. We'll be ready with our own and you going to go home in shame.
Encik M:
dah letak gamba kat internet pastu tak buat copyright apa semua bagai mmg la bole cedok..tanak orang pakai print n simpan dalam album. patut bangga la org nak pakai gamba.

Salam Hazman A,
gambar tu ada watermark..
bukan susah pun nak minta kebenaran..

Hazman A, it seem you're very defensive probably a friend of the "designer".
First of all, if you want to go in-depth, taking from the internet of a copyrighted item such as the picture of Encik M, is against the law (even in Malaysia : http://www.myipo.gov.my/hakcipta ). Encik M could potentially sue the designer for using it without permission, from what you say it seem that you think their act is right of stripping images from a copyrighted source.
About the entry, "there are no such thing as plagiarism in the world of architecture". Yes there is no, but is the idea really original? From the slides, almost all elements of what is IN [In]Closure is incorporated. The idea of creating a central park is obviously good but i don't see a sense of originality from the designers itself except for changing locations and using a different box system.
Kindly point out something that is in the terms of design (not location, not purpose) that is original from the designer if you could.
Beside of being so defensive, maybe a more positive way of receiving the feedback would be ideal.

abf,
I am not sure moderator of this contest have do their job to report the complaint to management or not. The contest seem more rushing to "completed on time" rather to choose the best idea.
Encik M.
I don't think their going to take any action now because only 2 more days the competition will come to an end.
Hazman A,
I don't know what is your role in "Cabin in the wood", but definitely using someone picture without permission is illegal.

To everyone who commented without watching both videos first, my reply is...watch the two videos first duh. As long as they develop this presentation on their own, what is the problem?
In fact, I would go so far as to say if I compare between the two presentation, this one is more interesting (I didn't feel sleepy as when I was watching the ABF one) <--- speaking from a non-architect's POV
I don't know the designers for this idea in real life, but I would like for it to be implemented in KL..would love to hang out there when it gets built.
The prize money is all and good, but I hope the idea that gets voted will be implemented (to organizers).
I hope you guys win!

This entry should be disqualified. This is a clear copy-cat idea. Not an innovation.
